Brickmania’s BT-7 Russian Light Cavalry Tank – In Detail

2110 BT-7 Cover__L

The BT-7 was a tank produced by the Soviet Union in the years leading up to World War II. It was the final version of the Soviet BT series of light cavalry tanks, which were based on Walter Christie’s revolutionary tank design. Its most remarkable feature was the ability to shed its tank tracks and convert to a wheeled vehicle for rapid movement along paved highways.  Learn more.

Soviet_cavalry_tank_BT-7

BT-7 with treads removed

While this feature was not fully appreciated in the Soviet Union’s mainly dirt roads, the BT-7 could still attain a remarkable 31 mph (50km/h) off road. The BT-7 also had steeply sloped frontal armor, which gave it better ballistic protection than other light tanks designs of the day, and feature that would become standard of all Soviet tank designs tanks. The BT-7 was armed with a 45mm L/46 high-velocity anti-tank gun, which gave it a noticeable advantage against contemporary light tanks of Germany and Japan. More than 2700 BT-7 light tanks were built during 1935-1940, after which T-34 Medium tank superseded all light and fast tanks in production. Many BT-7s were lost during Operation Barbarossa, but they continued to play a role throughout the war, including the Manchurian Strategic Offensive of 1945.

The FlaK 38 was 2cm automatic cannon used by German anti-aircraft units throughout World War II. While designed for anti-aircraft use, its high rate of fire proved deadly against enemy infantry and thin-skinned vehicles.  The FlaK 38 made prominent appearances in the movies Saving Private Ryan and Red Tails.

2112-M36-Jackson-Cover__1200

History of the M36 Jackson

The Tank Destroyer doctrine adopted by the US Army prior to World War II required specialized units and weapons be specifically tasked with neutralizing enemy armored vehicles. The 90mm Gun Motor Carriage M36 was the final of the self-propelled Tank Destroyers (“TDs”) fielded by the US Army during World War II. Its 90mm gun was adapted from an existing anti-aricraft weapon and was powerful enough to defeat the most heavily armored German behemoths. The M36 was officially nicknamed the “Jackson” by the US Army after the famous Civil War general of the same name.

M36 Jackson

M36 Jackson during the Battle of the Bulge

Development of the M36 Tank Destroyer started in 1942, when it became apparaent that the existing M10 “Wolverine” Tank Destoyer’s 3 inch gun would soon be obsolete against the Tiger tanks that began to appear on the Battlefields of North Africa and Europe. Demand for the more heavily armoed vehicle became urgent shortly after D-Day, when it became apparent that both M10 and the M4 Sherman Tank had extreme difficulty when faced with the heavily armoed Panther and Tiger tanks field by the German army. The first completed M36 TDs rolled off the assembly lines in June 1944 and began to arrive in Europe by August 1944. The M36 was urgently rushed to frontline units in France and quickly proved capable against even the heaviest vehicles it faced during the remaining months of the war in Europe. M36 also served with United Nations forces during the Korean War, where it proved capable of defeating any Soviet manufactured armored vehicles.

Like all American Tank Destroyer vehicles of World War II, the M36 had an open top fighting compartment. This was designed to both save weight and to give better all-around visibility for the TD commander and crew. The most predominant variation of the M36 was based on the very reliable M4A3 Sherman Tank chassis, but with the much lighter, slope-sided hull of its predasessor, the M10. The M36 carried 47 rounds of ammunition for its main gun and was given a single M2HB .50 caliber machine gun as secondary armorment, pintle-mounted on the counterweight/turret bustle.

More than 2300 M36 TDs were built during 1944-45, of which 157 were M36B1 variants (M36 turrent mounted on a modified M4A3 Sherman hull) and 287 of the M36B2 variant (M36 turret mounted in the diesel-powered M10 TD hull). Later modifications included a folding armor roof for the turret, a muzzle brake for the 90mm gun, and a hull mounted .30 caliber machine gun was added to the assitant driver’s position in the years after World War II.

Features of this kit:

  • Three WWII custom minifigs with the charactoristic Tank Destroyer sleeve patch

The GMC CCKW 2 1/2 ton 6×6 Truck was the workhorse of the US military’s overland logistics service and one of the most crucial pieces of hardware in the Allied arsenal during World War II. The famous “deuce and a half” (named for the 2½ ton weight of the truck) saw service worldwide, with hundreds of thousands being made during the war.  The CCKW was the chief means of cargo hauling used by the famous “Red Ball Express” supply convoy in Europe.  By the end of production in 1945, 562,750 CCKWs in all variants had been built, a total second only to the “Jeep”.

2103-Flak_36-Action-Flickr_1000

We are pleased to offer you the mighty “eighty-eight”, the Flak 36 anti-aircraft and anti-tank gun.  Our newest kit comes in an awesome Flakkorps upgrade edition!  Read on to learn more.

The 8.8 cm Flak 36 – often called the “88” or “acht-acht” was a german 88mm anti-aircraft and anti-tank gun used throughout WWII.  One of the most recognized German weapons of the war, this model led to the development of a wide variety of artillery.  “Flak” is a contraction of German Flugzeugabwehrkanone which means “aircraft-defense cannon”.  In English “Flak” became a generic term for ground anti-aircraft fire.   This is where the term “Taking Flak” is thought to have originated.  A single round from the 88 was capable of blowing the tail off of a bomber, which is exactly what happened to the B-17 “Hang the Expense” on a mission over Frankfurt.

0910121713460000002_08_2

While it was originally designed and mostly known as an anti-aircraft weapon, its versatile carriage allowed the 88 to be fired as an anti-tank gun as well.  Its success as and AT gun led to the development of a tank gun using the 88 as it’s base.  The 8.8 cm KwK 36 (KwK standing for Kampfwagen-Kanone or “Battle Vehicle Cannon”), was the main armament of the Tiger I heavy tank.

Rheinmetal later developed  a more powerful AA gun, the 8.8 cm Flak 41 and the tank destroyer 8.8cm PaK 43.  The PaK 43 was used for the Elefant and Jagdpanther, as well as the base for the turret-mounted 8.8 cm KwK 43 heavy tank gun on the Tiger II.

We have two versions of this epic artillery piece available:
